Going North - Julia Sercombe

Steep Point 2018

April 2018, it’s that time of year again, it’s time for Steep Point!!

Over the years it’s become a real Sercombe tradition to head to the Shark Bay World Heritage area, specifically into Steep Point for our annual family holiday. There’s no other place that can compete with camping on the beach, and shooting awesome fish on your front tent step. We love it!! And like every year the anticipation of the trip can become unbearable, especially when you still have four weeks of work left and conditions are undivable at home. This year was especially hard as I had recently accepted a new job in Broome, Western Australia and was planning to pack up my life and head 2000km north of my hometown Geraldton just four days after returning from Steep Point. There’s no was this was getting in my way of an awesome trip so we packed up our gear and headed 450km North into Steep Point.

Surface conditions upon arrival were exceptional and very inviting. We were all chomping at the bit to get in the water but after arriving at “the spot” our excitement quickly fizzled away as were presented with absolute filth. It was dirty! The water displayed more of a yellow tinge and when diving to the ledge at 15metres it was hard to adjust your eyes to see actual fish. We dived the first day, shooting a few Baldchin Groper and hoped that the water would start to clear towards the end of the week.

Fortunately the water did clear but unfortunately not by very much. Day by day we were able to dive deeper ledges but it made for spooky and unsettling dives. Towards the end of the week we were able to dive our favourite ledge in 20metres. In three dives I’d produced three Rankin cod and dad shot a nice Pink Snapper and Estuary Cod.

The diving didn’t quite go to plan but that’s the gamble every spearo takes when booking a dive trip. We can’t predict the visibility or weather conditions and there was no way I was going to allow that to put a dampener on my trip. I still loved every second, diving or not diving and can’t help but feel  blessed to be able to camp up on a white sandy beach with just your family and friends.

We’ll be returning in  2019 that’s for sure!!

As for now….I’m off to explore Broome!!
