7 Pro Tips to improve your Spearfishing Game

After years and years of spearfishing and designing/manufacturing gear, we wanted to share some game-changing tips that have made the biggest difference for our team:

1. Learn to Relax and Master Your Breathing First

Before adding a speargun to the mix or worrying about shooting fish become very comfortable in the water first and focus on relaxing as much as possible. This will ensure that when a gun is added you’ve already mastered the discipline of holding your breath long enough to shoot a fish.

2. Learn your species, how they behave and how to Hunt each one.

Over the years I have had a lot of success on hunting elusive reef fish which I attribute to being able to positively ID a wide variety of fish and understanding their behaviour. Once you master this the third part becomes much easier!

3. Slow and Steady wins the Fish

Instead of constantly swimming, try this: swim slowly to a promising area, then stop completely and drift motionless. Fish will often return when you're not actively pursuing them and you can asses their behaviour better.

4. Perfect Your Loading Technique

Practice loading quickly and efficiently underwater until it becomes second nature. A smooth, quiet load underwater means less disturbance and more fish.

5. Use the Sun to Your Advantage

Position yourself with the sun at your back when hunting. This makes you less visible to fish while making them more visible to you.

6. Learn to Read the Weather and Water Charts

In this day and age we are blessed with the technology we have and you need to ensure you are being as resourceful as possible. Multiple weather sites, apps and information is available at your fingertips. Using apps like Google Earth, Ripcharts and Navioncs will give you a massive advantage over those who don’t!

7. Have fun, dive safe and always watch each others backs

Spearfishing is meant to be fun and exciting so find a good crew and stick together like glue! You need people you can trust in the water as it comes with its dangers such as shallow water black out, sharks, boat traffic etc. Remember no fish is worth your life!
