Spearfishing gear built for Sydney and NSW conditions

Sydney offers some of the best temperate spearfishing in the country, with kelp reef, ledges and headlands right along the coast and clear bluewater a short run offshore. The gear that works here has to handle a range of conditions: variable visibility close in, clean water out wide, and a stack of hard-fighting fish led by the kingfish Sydney is known for.

For most Sydney divers a 90 to 110cm railgun is the sweet spot for reef and ledge work, with a longer roller or bluewater gun earning its place out wide after kingfish and pelagics. Pair it with a titanium-lined wetsuit to stay comfortable through the cooler NSW seasons, and a set of quality fins to cover the ground.

Every Aimrite gun is hand-built in Cairns and backed by a lifetime warranty, and we ship Australia-wide with fast dispatch, so your kit reaches Sydney and regional NSW quickly.

Spearfishing around Sydney

Where to dive around Sydney

  • Offshore reefs & FADsKingfish, snapper and pelagics out wide, with summer FADs holding mahi mahi.
  • Northern Beaches reefsKelp reef and ledges along the coast — steer clear of the aquatic reserves at Long Reef and Cabbage Tree Bay.
  • Botany Bay & KurnellAccessible headland and reef diving handy to the city, with sheltered spots that suit newer divers.
  • Central Coast (Terrigal, Avoca)Reef and headland systems north of Sydney with a shot at bigger fish.
  • South Coast (Cronulla, Bass Point, Shellharbour)Clear water, reef and bommies within easy reach south of the city. Port Hacking is closed to spearfishing, so shore divers need to be outside it, and Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point is a no-take reserve.

Large parts of the Sydney coast are closed to spearfishing. Port Hacking and its bays are closed, all ocean beaches are closed except the last 20 metres at each end, and no-take aquatic reserves include Cabbage Tree Bay and Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point.

Eastern blue groper is fully protected. Spearing one has been banned since 1969 and a total fishing ban now runs to March 2028, with fines reaching $22,000.

You must pay the NSW recreational fishing fee, dive on breath-hold, and keep 50 metres clear of other water users. Check the DPI spearfishing closure maps before every dive.

Common questions

Spearfishing gear FAQ

Do you ship spearfishing gear to Sydney?
Yes. We ship Australia-wide with fast dispatch, so your gear reaches Sydney and regional NSW quickly — usually within a few days.
What speargun size suits Sydney conditions?
For Sydney reef and ledge work a 90 to 110cm railgun is ideal, with a longer roller or bluewater gun for chasing kingfish and pelagics out wide.
What wetsuit thickness do I need in NSW?
A 3mm suits the warmer months, a 5mm covers spring and autumn, and a 7mm keeps you comfortable through the cold winter water.
Do I need a licence to spearfish in NSW?
Yes. You'll need to pay the NSW recreational fishing fee, dive on breath-hold only (no scuba), and stay out of aquatic reserves and closed areas. Note that blue groper is fully protected and can't be speared.
Where can I spearfish around Sydney?
There's reef and bluewater from the Central Coast down to the south coast, with the offshore reefs the pick for kingfish — always check for aquatic reserves and spearfishing closures before you get in.
