Speargun Reel Guide

A reel turns your speargun into a self contained unit. No float to tow, no line trailing behind you, nothing to drag through kelp when you want to move down the reef.
That freedom is the whole appeal, and it's also the catch. Everything a float was doing for you is now your job to manage, and the divers who get burned by reels are almost always the ones who didn't realise that.
Here's how to pick one, spool it and dive it properly.
What A Reel Actually Buys You

Mobility. You can cover ground, work along a reef edge and duck through structure without dragging a float behind you.

No surface tangle. Nothing on the surface to wrap around kelp, catch chop or get pushed around by wind.

Easier travel. A reel packs with the gun. A float and 20 metres of line does not.

Cleaner shooting. No float line hanging off your handle pulling the gun off aim, which is a genuine complaint from divers running long float lines at depth.

Shore diving. Swimming out through surf with a float is a chore. With a reel you just swim.
What It Costs You
Be honest about this part before you buy, because these are the reasons experienced divers push beginners toward a float first.

You're the line management. A float absorbs a fish's run on its own. A reel needs you paying attention, setting drag properly and knowing when to let line go.

You lose surface visibility. This is the big one. A float with a flag tells boats you're there. A reel tells them nothing.

No buoyancy fighting the fish. A float wears a fish out by making it drag flotation around. With a reel, the fish is pulling against you and your gun.

Getting pulled down. If something bigger takes your fish while you're connected, the line is now between you and a much stronger animal.

Structure is unforgiving. Shoot into reef or kelp with a reel that keeps feeding line and you can end up wrapped around something you can't see.
The visibility point is not a small one. Australian spearfishing safety guidance on boat and diver interaction treats a surface marker as core equipment, and diver down awareness campaigns exist because boats genuinely do not see divers otherwise.
None of this makes reels bad. It makes them a tool that assumes competence you build over time.

Plenty of divers end up running both, a reel for the working dive and a float for visibility and for the days they're chasing something serious.
How Much Line Do You Need
Reels are commonly sold holding somewhere between 20 and 50 metres of line, and picking within that range is mostly about depth.
The working principle is the same as a float line. You want meaningfully more line than your maximum depth, because a fish that runs horizontally after you've shot at depth needs line for both the down and the along.

Shallow reef work to about 10 metres. A 30 metre reel is plenty and easier to manage.

Diving beyond about 20 metres. Step up to 50 metres. This is the point most divers make the change.

Bigger, faster fish. More line again, or reconsider whether a reel is the right call at all.
More line is not automatically better. A bigger spool is more bulk on the gun, more weight, and more line to go wrong if it overruns.
Line Choice
Reel line runs much thinner than float line, typically somewhere around 1.5mm to 2mm against the 6mm to 12mm you'd see on a float line. It has to be, because it needs to fit on a spool and move through water without drag.
Why It Can Be So Thin
Most divers run dyneema or spectra, which are the same ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibre under two brand names. The tensile performance of that fibre is what lets a line that thin hold a serious fish. It's the right choice for the job, with two things to respect.
The first is that thin, strong line cuts. This is well documented in industrial rope safety, where manufacturers warn plainly about handling loaded synthetic line, and the same applies wherever these fibres carry load. Never grab a running line with a bare hand, and never wrap it around anything, least of all a body part.
Matching It To The Rest Of The Rig
The second is that your line needs to be matched to the rest of your rig. There's no point running line rated well below what your bands and shaft can deliver, and our shaft and rubber specifications give you the numbers that end of the setup is working with.
Drag Is The Setting That Matters
If there's one thing to get right, it's drag, and it's the thing beginners most often leave at whatever the factory set.
Drag simply sets the resistance at which line pays out under load. Too loose and the spool overruns, dumping line into a nest that jams at the worst moment. Too tight and there's no give at all, and every bit of a fish's first run goes straight into your rigging and into the spear's hold in the fish, which is where things tear.
What you want is enough resistance that line pays out smoothly under a solid pull, and enough that it stops when the pull stops. Set it in the water, not on the bench, and reset it when you change line or target species.
Mounting And The Line Release
Reels mount underneath the gun, usually near the handle. What matters more than the position is whether you can operate everything while wearing what you actually dive in.
Try It In The Gloves You Actually Dive In
This is a genuinely underrated point and divers raise it constantly. One diver in cooler water found a recessed bottom mounted line release very hard to work in 3mm gloves and close to impossible in 5mm, and switched to a gun with a side mounted release for exactly that reason. Another diver using the same brand said he has no trouble in the same thickness gloves and puts it down to technique.
Both are probably right, which is the useful lesson. Ergonomics that suit one diver's hands and gloves do not automatically suit another's. If you dive cold water in thick gloves, try the release before you commit.

Spooling It Properly

Wind under tension. Loose wraps bed down under load and jam. Keep steady pressure the whole way.

Lay it evenly. Guide the line side to side so it builds flat rather than piling in the middle.

Do not overfill. Leave a few millimetres below the spool lip, because an overfull spool throws loops off the rim.

Secure the tag end. Properly attached at the spool, so a long run does not simply pull your line off.

Check the path to the shaft. The line should run cleanly from spool to muzzle to shaft without rubbing on anything.
Respool at the start of each season, and inspect the line any time it has taken a serious run. Look for chafe, flat spots and anywhere the outer fibres have gone fluffy, and replace it rather than hoping.
Diving A Reel Without Getting Into Trouble
The technique is mostly about restraint.

Let the fish run. Fighting the first run is how spears tear out. Let drag do its job.

Never wrap the line. Not around your hand, wrist, gun or anything else. A running fish turns a wrapped line into an injury or a trip downward.

Watch where your line is relative to structure. Line has an unhelpful habit of finding the one bommie you did not want it near.

Be ready to ditch the gun. One diver made the point that you should be able to let go of your gun if you get into serious trouble, which is also an argument against a first gun so expensive you would hesitate.

Carry a knife you can reach with either hand. Same rule as any line diving.

Dive with someone. A reel does nothing to help you if you black out.
That fourth point deserves emphasis. Any rigging decision that makes you reluctant to let go is a bad decision. Gear is replaceable.
Looking After It
A reel has moving parts and lives in salt water, which is a bad combination that only maintenance fixes.

Rinse thoroughly after every dive, including the spool and the drag mechanism.

Let the line dry rather than storing it soaked and wound tight.

Check the drag still moves smoothly before each trip, because seized drag is the common failure.

Look at the line for chafe where it runs over the muzzle and any guides.

Check screws and mounts have not backed off with vibration and handling.
What The Evidence Backs Up

What To Do Next
